Why the same foot gets four different numbers
US and UK sizes count in barleycorns, an old English unit of one third of an inch, but they start counting from different zero points, which is why a UK men's size is usually half a size to a full size below the US number. European sizes count in Paris points of two thirds of a centimetre and measure the shoe's inside length rather than the foot. Japan and the ISO Mondopoint system skip the history and simply print the foot length in centimetres or millimetres.
Because the steps are different sizes, conversions never line up perfectly. That is also why adidas labels some EU sizes 42 ⅔ and 43 ⅓ while Nike rounds to 42.5 and 43. Measure your foot and drag the explainer there to see the three scales drift apart.

What is a size 8 in EU?
A US men's 8 is EU 41; a US women's 8 is EU 39. Say which chart you mean, because men's and women's numbers sit 1.5 sizes apart.
Is UK sizing the same as US sizing?
No. For men, UK is about half a size smaller than US (US 9 = UK 8 on Nike's chart, 8.5 at adidas). For women, UK runs about 2 to 2.5 sizes below US (US women's 8 = UK 5.5).
Why do two brands give different EU sizes for the same US size?
There is no single international shoe standard in stores. Each brand maps its own lasts to US, UK and EU numbers, and the European system steps in two-thirds of a centimetre, so half-size rounding differs. Measuring your foot in centimetres and matching it to the brand's own chart is the most reliable way to choose.
