Shirts, collars and suits. Men's clothes are mostly sized by one body measurement, which makes converting easier than it looks.
Brands vary. These conversions follow the Croft & Barrow men's tops chart and the chest-based suit sizing convention. Another label can run half a size (or a whole size) different, so if the store publishes its own chart, trust that first. All sources
Why an EU 50 is a US 40
US and UK suit sizes are your chest in inches. Continental sizes are half your chest in centimetres. Convert and halve, and you land near the "+10" rule:
40 in × 2.54 = 101.6 cm → ÷ 2 = 50.8 → EU 50
Halving is only exact around the middle of the range: 2.54 ÷ 2 = 1.27, so each extra inch adds 1.27 EU points, not 1. A 50-inch chest halves to about 63.5 cm, yet it is sold as an EU 60. Stores keep the simple +10 labels, so use them, and check the jacket's measured chest if you are at the ends of the range.

How do I convert a US suit size to EU?
Add 10. A US/UK 40 suit is an EU 50, a 42 is a 52. European suit sizes are half your chest in centimetres: a 40-inch chest is 101.6 cm, half of which is about 50.
What collar size in cm is 15.5?
A 15.5-inch collar is a 39 in European shirts (15.5 × 2.54 = 39.4 cm). 16 inches is 41 cm, 16.5 is 42 cm.
What size is a men's medium shirt?
On the Croft & Barrow chart a men's medium fits a 15–15.5 inch neck and a 38–41 inch chest. Slim-fit brands often cut a medium closer to a 38–40 inch chest.
What do S, R and L mean on suit jackets?
Short, Regular and Long refer to your height and change the jacket and sleeve length, not the chest. Kohl's, for example, lists short as under 5'8", regular as 5'8" to 5'11.5" and tall as 6' to 6'4".
